Awards Ceremony 27 May 2011

Our annual Awards Ceremony took place on Fri May 27 th. The awards celebrate many different aspects of school life from the academic, cultural, sport and extra curricular and highlight the wonderful contributions both of students and staff to life in Presentation Secondary School.

Awards were presented to Big Sisters, Student Council Members, Students regarding Attendance, Junior and Senior Academic Awards, Best Junior and Leaving Cert Students of 2010 State Exams, JCSP Awards,

The Joyce Art Award, the Duais Mhic Canna le haghaidh Gaeilge, Sports Leadership Award and Sports Awards, 2 nd Year Junior Achievement Awards, the Parent Merit Award, Gaeltacht Scholarships, Gael Certificates, Bank of Ireland Student of the Year Awards at Junior and Senior, The Ciara Grehan Memorial Award, The House Captain Award and the House Cup from our Inter House Competition. Congratulations to all involved in this wonderful picture of life in our school.

NUIG Maths Summer School 2011
Dr Catherine Palucci of NUIG launching its First Year Students Maths Summer Programme.  This is a one week programme beginning June 7th and aimed at First Year Students with the aim of promoting enjoyment of Mathematics. We wish our course participants success and high learning! 

Pres. Sports Day Friday, 20 May 2011

On Friday, May 20th students and staff relocated to Dangan Sports Pitch for a very enjoyable sports day. Our 4 HouseTeams competed against each other and the overall winners will be announced this coming week. The full range of competitions included Javelin, Shot, Long Jump, Discus, Javelin, 100 & 200 Metres, Ball Throw, Welly Throw, Tug of War and Relay!
Great fun was had by all and many thanks to all who helped to organise this very successful and enjoyable day.

School Year 2010 - 2011

Leaving Certificate Graduation Mass 13 May 2011
Congratulations to our Leaving Certificate students for whom Graduation Mass and Ceremonies were held on Friday May 13 th 2011. Students, Parents, Staff and Sisters from the Presentation Convent gathered to celebrate the occasion. The Class chose the theme of ‘Chrysalis’ as their theme and produced some wonderful artwork to highlight this theme. The recurrent theme of the ceremony was transformation and new futures all rooted in the Presentation ideal of education as being the part of this whole journey

Simon Sleepover for Charity April 2011
Recently Leaving Certificate students organised a sleepover in school to raise awareness and funds for Galway Simon Community. Picture shows Sr. Gabriel and some of the students.  Many thanks to all those who were involved and €350 was raised for this worthwhile charity.

Launch of Inter-House Competition 13 April 2011

All students and staff have been assigned to one of 4 school based houses; Blake, Deane, Kirwan and Darcy. Each house has a 5 th Yr Captain and a TY Vice Captain. The overall aim of this exciting venture is to promote teamwork and involvement in school life.

Home Ec.Student Teacher March 2011
Pictured with Sr Gabriel and Cliona Ni Neill is Barbara Hannon, a 3rd Yr Student from St. Angela's College in Sligo. Barbara is studying Home Economics and Biology and has spent the past 5 weeks on placement in our Science and Home Economics Departments.  We thank her for her time and enthusiasm and wish her well with her studies and upcoming exams in St. Angela's.

Past Pupil Visit March 2011
Pictured here are Mary Mc Mullin, LCVP Cordinator, Tracey Costello, Bank of Ireland and Collette Mc Walter PLC Coordinator.  Tracey is a recent past pupil who completed her PLC in Business Studies and IT and then completed her Degree in Business Studies in GMIT and is currently employed in the Bank of Ireland. She visited Senior Business Students to share her expertise on Job Search and Preparing for Interview and focusing on Higher Education.  Many thanks to Tracey for her enthusiasm and interest.

Grow your Own March 2011

Pictured here are a number of our Third Year Home Economics Class beginning their new ‘Grow Your Own’ gardening venture. This project is funded by the HSE Combat Obesity Programme which encourages students to focus on Healthy Eating and growing their own vegetable into the future.

Anti Bullying Drama Workshops March 2011

Recently our students participated in Drama Workshops which focused on the topic of Anti-Bullying. The workshops were led and facilitated by Catherine Simon and issues were explored through the meda of drama, role play and discussion. This is all part of our policy of making our school a safe school for all students. Many thanks to our students for their engagement and participation and also to Catherine for her great work.

Enterprise Challenge March 2011

Recently 2 nd year Business students from Presentation Secondary School visited GMIT with their Junior Achievement local Business Volunteer Michael White from Boston Scientific.
During the visit and tour of GMIT students explored employment opportunities centered around a selection of GMIT Courses. The aim of this programme is to build links between our school, GMIT and local business. Many Thanks to Boston Scientific, GMIT and Junior Achievement for this initiative.

Junior Achievement Success Skills & Interview Programme February 2011

Transition Year students have begun a Programme linking School and the World of Work. This is an 8 week module which was local business volunteer tom Langan and Junior Achievement Regional and Local Co-ordinators Ray Fogarty and Niamh Grealish.

Simon Fundraiser January 2011

Pictured here are Student Council Members along with Principal, Cliona Ni Neill launching their Pyjama Day in aid of the Simon Community. This fundraising project will culminate in a sponsored sleepover in School. Funds raised will be donated to the local Simon Community.

Careers Fair January 2011

2011 Past Pupils’ Careers Fair took place in school on Friday January 14 th.
50 Past pupils generously gave of their time in assisting current Leaving Certificate Students with their final CAO choices and also other options after 6 th Yr.

Presentation Secondary Mini Co Project for 2010 / 2011

Lubos Vaclavek from American Power Conversion (APC) in Ballybrit, our Junior Achievement Business Volunteer l. Lubos will facilitate this project with our Students and their Business Teacher Ms Fogarty.

AIM OF THIS PROGRAMME:
This programme aims to educate students in the area of enterprise and business. Students set up and run their own company, primarily under the guidance of the business volunteer. This ensures that a bridge is being built between the classroom and the world of work in a real sense.

Presentation Nominees for the 2011 Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards

 

Congratulations to our students Christine Dooley & Roisin Cribbin on being chosen as our school Nominees for the above Award. Both girls are 6th year students who volunteered to work for 8 days this past Summer in Belarussia in an Orphanage. Both girls did extensive fundraising in order to make this work possible and also to assist the Orphanage.
This award is a national programme for outstanding young volunteers and we are happy to nominate Christine and Roisin for this award.

TY Graduation May 2011

Congratulations to our 2011 Transition Year Class and to a successful completion of their TY Programme. Their Graduation Ceremony with City Mayor Michael Crowe as keyknote speaker was held Tuesday May 24 th. This ceremony celebrated the achievements of their Year from the Academic, Gaisce, Sporting and Personal Development.

Downs Syndrome Ireland Fundraiser May 2011

APC Schneider Electric Company Business Apr 2011

Recently TY students had the pleasure of visiting the APC Schneider Plant in Ballybrit. This was the final part of their Mini Company Programme with their business volunteer Lubos Vaclavek. Lubos had worked with our students in school on their own Company - Buttons and Bows and on this occasion he introduced them to life in his company with an on site visit and demonstration of company products. Most importantly of all, their company HR Manager, Grainne O'Meara gave students a presentation on the selection process used in APC when they recruit new staff. This was a very valuable and educational visit by our students and we are most grateful for the welcome and effort shown by APC personnel to our students.

Visit to GMIT Engineering Dept.
March 2011

GMIT Engineering Dept visited our 3 rd Year and TY students recently as part of our Senior Subject Choice Information Sessions. Kate Goggin and Evelyn Ui Eachteirn highlighted the advantages and uses of studying Maths and Sciences and also introduced our students to student life in GMIT/

Our Prize Winning Film Crew on 'The Adventures of Sheila Sherlock' March 2011

Congratulations to the JCSP group on the selection of their film ‘The Adventures of Sheila Sherlock” for the Fresh Film Festival inLimerick. Their film was selected by a panel of 10 independent film makers who viewed films from all over the country. As part of the Fresh Film Festival, this fill was shown in the Storm Cinema in Limerick on Wednesday, March 30 and our cast / directors and producers were in attendance to collect their prize! Well done to all !
